Walking
If you are thinking of jumping into the car to get to another part of the Lower Don Valley, why not walk instead? For example it's a 15/20 minute walk from Valley Centertainment to Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
Journey planning and routes
As you would expect, there are many paths around the Lower Don Valley. The Five Weirs Walk is the main extra route in the area, which includes paths that go along the banks of the River Don. There are also paths running alongside the Sheffield & Tinsley canal.
To plan your walking journeys in Sheffield, use Walkit.com. It gives you directions, a map and a hill profile and also shows time taken and CO2 and calories saved.
See the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Sheffield City Council websites for more information on walking.
Benefits of walking
Walking is:
- Free - save money on your travel
- Healthy – helping weight loss, wellbeing and the risk of medical problems such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and strokes
- Good for safety – pavements are safer to be on than roads
- Sociable – some of the best conversations happen on foot
- Interesting – how many things would you notice on your journey than if you travelled another way?
