Cycling

Cycling is a great way to stay fit and travel quickly and reliably in an area the size of Lower Don Valley.  With many routes available you might find it is easier to cycle around than you thought.

Maps and training

Cycle Maps - There are maps in Sheffield (including the Darnall & Tinsley Cycle Map) and Rotherham that show recommended ways to cycle.  The following are some of the key routes available in the area.

  • River Don / Route 6 - Route 6 of the National Cycle Network joins Sheffield and Rotherham centres, going along the River Don and finally the Sheffield to Keadby canal.  It goes through Attercliffe, Newhall, Carbrook, Meadowhall, Tinsley and Masbrough.
  • Canal - The path along the Sheffield & Tinsley canal (which leads on to the Sheffield to Keadby canal in Rotherham) is often uneven but would be fine for mountain bikes.  However you do need permission to use it (call British Waterways on 01923 201120).
  • Staniforth Road to Sheffield Arena - There is an off road cycle track that starts from the Woodburn/Staniforth Road junction that's goes to Sheffield Arena and Valley Centertainment.

Cycle Training - Free two hour cycle training is available in both Rotherham and Sheffield for residents.  Many have started cycling after building their confidence on the roads with the advice and support that Pedal Ready (the cycle training providers) give.  For information for organisations wanting to supply cycle training to their employees see the Resources part of the Members section.
